Cebastian will attend Celebración, an annual showcase event that kicks-off the new year as we close out 2019 and begin looking towards the summer of 2020. Established in 2003, as the "NHI Expo" in Corpus Christi, Celebración has grown to become the National Hispanic Institute's (NHI) largest event for members and community partners. NHI's continued commitment to its vision of strengthening the community equity building capacities of Latinos by furthering the leadership development of their more promising youth. The showcase experience also reflects the continuing support that comes from so many sectors of the Latino community, primarily from parents and students, but also school leaders, business and professional interests, institutions of higher learning, and NHI alumni, who together make the work possible. While the program places a premium on college admissions, Celebración’s most important mission is community social entrepreneurship and leadership training and development. Students network with peers from different backgrounds, take decisive action under pressure, make critical decisions that are not always guided by popular opinion, and gain valuable insight into organized group efforts. The Celebración experience develops skills that are vital to college, career, and life. Celebración also provides a setting where students can honestly exchange views on issues that are culturally and intellectually thought-provoking while learning in a game-based, competitive environment designed to heighten winning attitudes. The funds raised will cover the remaining expenses of Celebración taking place October 31 - November 3, 2019 at the Wyndham San Antonio Riverwalk. Cebastian put $100 of his own money, earned working as an intern at Rio Rancho High School, to secure his spot at Celebracion 2019; travel was generously covered by his grandparents Grandpa Lee and Nani Sanchez.
