NHI Founder Ernesto Nieto's 80th birthday, on October 6, 2020, spawned a major gift of $40,000 from an anonymous donor, who challenged NHI's fund-raising team to match it dollar for dollar, at the end of which an additional $40,000 is pledged.
"I was humbled and choked up by the gift," said Ernie. "I didn't know how to respond, other than this has been a true effort by all of us and I felt that this donor, and many more, want to make sure NHI is around for generations to come."
The $40,000 gift came on a video teleconference on Ernesto's 80th birthday, and is joined by contributions of $3,355 raised on his birthday, and additional amounts including that of Patty and Doug Wolf of San Antonio, Carmen Saenz and others that have come in during October and November.
"We wanted to share news of this major gift on Giving Tuesday, December 1, with the intent to spend the next three months working on the $40,000 match through February 28," stated Nicole Nieto, Executive Vice President.
This gift, its matching contributions, and its intended future match will be named the NHI Legacy Fund, and will be invested as a reserve fund to provide long-term, ongoing support for NHI’s operations and programs.
"We are delighted to have the beginnings of a reserve fund to provide space and time for us to build for the future," said Nieto. "Up until now our investment has been in our community, our students, and some land and buildings; now, it's time to attend to NHI's economic longevity."
NHI appreciates any and all gifts to the NHI Legacy Fund. Other fund categories include scholarships, internships, capital improvements, and regional fund-raisers for NHI's regional alliance organizations. More information can be found at www.nationalhispanicinstitute.org.
